캘리포니아 얼바인 교육구에서도커먼코어(Common Core)과정을 시작한 2014-15 학년도 중반에 접어들고 있는데 학생들이 실제로 새로운 교과과정에 적응을 잘하고 있는지 의문을 가질 때가 되었다. 가끔 집에서'에볼라(Ebola)'라든가'Crop Circles'같은시사적인 주제를 꺼내어 부모님의 의견을 묻는 일이 조금 잦아졌다는 것 등으로세상일에 관심을 갖고 스스로 생각해보기 시작했다는 긍정적인 신호라는 생각이 든다.
예전부터 영자신문이나 타임 이나 내셔널 지오그래픽 같은 시사잡지를 늘상 접하는 학생은 논리적인사고력과 언변은 물론 작문실력까지 발달한다고 익히 들어 알고 있지만 바쁜 학교생활과 교외활동 등을 해내기만도 만만치 않아이를 실천하기는 쉽지가 않다. 그렇다고 해도 변명만 하고 넋놓고 있을 때는 아닌 듯..
한인 아이비 리그 대학 입학생 중 약 40%가 중도에 포기하거나 탈락한다는 통계를 담은 충격적인 기사들이 끊임없이 나오고 있는데 그 '한인' 카테고리에는 한국에서 온 유학생 뿐 아니라 미국에서 교육받은 한인 학생들을 모두 포함하고 있다는 현실이다. 여러가지 요인 중 가장 큰 실패 이유는 '영어'... 더 자세히 말하면 Reading, 그리고 Writing 이라고 한다.
영어를 알아만 듣고 말할 수만 있어도 왠만큼 영어를 한다고 생각했던 우리 한인 1세들이 생각하기엔 너무 높디높은 장벽이다. 걸음마를 띨 때부터 다양한 장르를 꾸준히 읽고 생각하고 말하고 써오던 네이티브들도 힘들어하는 아이비 리그 대학의 수업과 과제들.. 오죽하면대학각 과정마다과제 대행업체도 생겨나고 심지어과목마다 튜터링을 받는 한인 학생들도 많다고 할까..
한숨만 짓는 한심함 보다는 해결책을 찾아야 한다. 앞으로 개정될 SAT 도 커먼코어의 영어학습의 중심인 논픽션 비중을 늘린다고 칼리지 보드에서 발표한바 있다. 커먼코어와 새로 바뀔 SAT의 배경 자체가많은 학생들이 대학 진학 후 학과 지식에 필수적인 고난이도의 독해 실력을 갖추지 못하고 있다는 지적에 따른 것이기 때문이다.
